What We Do
Stump grinding is the fastest and cleanest way to remove a stump without tearing up your yard. We use commercial-grade grinding equipment that chips the stump and its upper root flare into mulch well below ground level, leaving you with a flat, plantable surface instead of a hole or a crater.
- Site check and utility awareness. We look at what is around the stump, including irrigation lines, pavers, block walls, and buried utilities, and plan the grind to avoid damage.
- Grinding below grade. We typically grind 6 to 12 inches below the soil surface, deep enough for new sod, plants, or hardscape to go right over the top.
- Surface root removal. For trees with large exposed roots, we chase and grind the major roots so they do not keep lifting your lawn or patio.
- Cleanup and backfill. We remove or spread the grindings as you prefer, backfill with soil, and leave the area level and tidy.
- Full stump removal when needed. For construction projects or spots where the entire root ball must come out, we can excavate the stump completely.

Why it Matters
Stumps do not just sit there. As the wood decays it becomes a food source and nesting site for termites, carpenter ants, and beetles, and those pests do not stay in the stump. In Arizona, where termite pressure is already high, an old stump within a few feet of your home is a risk you do not need. Decaying stumps can also host fungi and disease that spread to nearby healthy trees.
Many desert-adapted species, including mesquite, palo verde, elm, and sissoo, will keep sending up shoots from a cut stump for years. Every sprout you pull comes back. Grinding the stump and its root flare shuts that cycle down and saves you from constant maintenance.

Randy was good at explaining what he saw about the health of our trees and course of action. He also volunteered tips how to take care of some other trees on our property.
We had the bio-boost treatment to help a struggling ash tree and to also boost some orange trees that we planted last year. He was also a good natured and helpful person also volunteering some tips about care of our orange trees. The bio-boost is injected into the ground with a probe. Note: it may result in puncturing underground irrigation if unlucky. The probe poked a clean hole into our in-ground PVC irrigation lateral that I paid someone to come repair.
Another crew came to trim dead branches from our large tree and remove some stumps with a grinder. I thought they would just grind and leave holes. I was pleased that they cleaned up the debris, filled the holes, and covered with the surrounding gravel. Where there had been stumps, I could hardly tell there had been anything there before at all. Will was the crew's lead person who spoke with me during their time in our yard. I also found him to be good at explaining and I felt like he actually did care about the quality of work being done. I hope that Heartwood will reward him and the others who came with him.
